Every Sunday, every month, every year, or every decade?

Yes, the first thermometers used alcohol, but it wasn't brandy. That would be silly. Brandy is sticky. The thermometer was invented by Daniel Fahrenheit in 1709, and the mercury thermometer in 1715. However, mercury is almost never used anymore in thermometers sold to the public, as it is poisonous. Now most bulb thermometers again use alcohol. Don't believe everything you get in e-mails, or read on the internet.

Okay, here's an easy one. Both the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales use a freezing temperature of water for zero degrees; what is the difference?

as to the tree question-

4. It takes 500,000 trees to make the Sunday newspapers each week in the U.S

as to the brandy question;

#166 Before mercury, brandy was used to fill thermometers.

also a good read;

Except for the amount of sweat on the brow, there was no way to measure heat at the start of the 17th century. What we call thermometers today were originally called "thermoscopes." Although these tools were being developed by several people, Italian inventor Santorio Santorio was first to put a numerical scale on the instrument. Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the first mercury thermometer in 1724.

and this;
The history of the thermometer has been recently been red-hot. A professor at the University of Arkansas, Jacob Adler, has found what appears to be the first description of a liquid-in-glass thermometer. He stumbled upon it in a book Ma'yan Ganim (A Fountain of Gardens) published in 1629 by the physician and rabbi Joseph Solomon Delmedigo. Delmedigo's thermometer was filled not with mercury but with brandy.

i might mention, blood-letting was silly as well, but it was the number one treatment for all kinds of ailments in it's day............

I might also mention that the question did not say that we were STILL using mercury, only wanted to know what we used BEFORE mercury------
Buddha said, "for exact communication, exact attention is necessary."

like you said;
don't believe everything you read on the internet (or in game threads, i would add)
but, i would also add, try to have fun with it when you DO read it.
