That honor goes to cowboy humorist Will Rogers.
Rogers worked for a wild west show before joining the Ziegfeld Follies. His popularity in
Vaudeville eventually led to a film contract. By 1930, Rogers was making $200,000 per
movie, while Bela Lugosi, who was filming Dracula at the time, was paid $3,500 for the
role.
