TRUTH !!
in the mid-1800's, charles forster of maine imported toothpicks, which could only be found in brazil. he hired harvard students to eat at restaurants in boston and demand toothpicks in order to drum up business.
union oyster house, established in 1826, was the first to carry them.
by 1860, the demand was so great that forster developed his own toothpick-making machinery and began turning out over a million toothpicks an hour at his factory in strong, maine.
