The first venue to be called a restaurant was opened in 1765 in Paris by a Parisian soup maker named A. Boulanger. His was the first eating establishment to offer a menu with a choice of dishes. The sign above his door advertised restoratives, or restaurants, referring to his soups and broths. Not much is known about A. Boulanger which may not be his real name since boulanger in French means baker.
