They were uncle nd nephew.
Pliny the Elder was born in A.D. 23 and died in 69.
He had no children, so he adopted his orphaned nephew, who was born around A.D. 61 (died around 113) and was also named Pliny; They added "Elder" and "Younger" do differentiate themselve, as both were well-known authors.
