The slogan, which has appeared on the front page of the Times since Feb. 10, 1897, was conceived by the publisher, Adolph S. Ochs. He then offered a $100 prize to anyone who could come up with a better one. The winner was, "All the world news, but not a school for scandal". Not surprisingly, Ochs decided to stay with his own.
