the worst industrial accident occurred in Bhopal, India, during the early hours of December 3, 1984.
a deadly chemical gas, methyl isocyanate, leaked out of union carbide's pesticide factory, killing more than 2,500 people outright (some 6,000 would later die from their injuries) and injuring as many as 600,000 others.
the company and the Indian government settled on a figure of $470 million for the injured, a controversial number when compared to the $5 billion in punitive damages levied against Exxon for the Valdez spill in prince William sound, where there was zero loss of human life.

The Texas City explosion occurred at a British Petroleum refinery. It is the third largest refinery in the United States and one of the largest in the world, processing 433,000 barrels of crude oil per day and accounting for 3% of that nation's gasoline supply. Over 100 were injured, and 15 were confirmed dead, including employees of the Fluor Corporation as well as BP.
