Susan Eloise Hinton was only 16 when she wrote it and was still a freshman at the University of Tulsa when the book was published, and was followed by That was Then, This is Now; Rumblefish; and Tex.
Hinton's first four novels were made into movies.
 
Well...I got #2 right. LOL!!! And I think it is pretty amazing that SE Hinton wrote that while only 16. Considering that the book is part of most Language Arts curricula now, thats a pretty neat achievement for a 16 year old.
