Salt still high on restaurant menus

It applauds Subway, McDonald's and Burger King for salt reduction from 2009 to 2013, but criticizes KFC, Jack in the Box and Red Lobster, which the Center For Science in the Public Interest says have actually increased sodium in meals over that time period.

On average, large chain restaurants have lowered sodium in their food by a scant 1.5% annually from 2009 to 2013, the report says. "At that rate, to get even a 30% reduction, it would take 20 years, which is crazy," says Michael Jacobson, executive director of CSPI.

Burger King also scored well in the survey, which showed it reduced sodium by about 27% during the same period. McDonald's also scored well, in part because it's reduced the amount of fries in its Happy Meals and added apple slices. The survey showed 100% of its meals had sodium reduction, and its overall sodium reduction during the four-year period was 17%.

But KFC, Jack in the Box and Red Lobster actually added sodium during the time period, says the report.

At KFC, sodium increased 12.4%; at Jack in the Box 7.2% and at Red Lobster 4.3% over the four year period, the report concludes.
