What Is This?

SO found this on a tree outside a Trader Joe's. I don't have a clue what it is.
They're about an inch or so in diameter.

What is this?

Looks like something you might want to take back. Don't touch it!
Aliens could have left it.

What kind of tree was it?
Does that pod feel warm and fuzzy all over, have a heart beat?
Seriously put it back!

Just messing with ya. Maybe some kid left it to get one over on someone.
You could always hand it out to the Trick or treaters. Let them worry about it while you soak up all the media's attention :)

According to Google's image search, it seems to be a nebula.

Hey! I didn't know you could do that with google!

It's marginally smaller than a nebula and grows on trees.

Google is never ever wrong. It's a Nebula. Told you it was left by Aliens.

Andy are your fingers numb?

It's the berry of the Kousa (a.k.a. Korean) Dogwood tree. It's ugly, but edible.

It's rumored you can make wine or jelly from them. Not that I've tried to make either.
