Why do restaurants do this?

It's ease and convenience for the staff...and you should let management know that you don't care for the practice. If he hears it enough, perhaps they'll make a change.

Comes across as tacky & cheap, to me. When I drank decaf, didn't care for being handed a packet of Sanka & a cup of boiling water. Here, make your own coffee. I figured they bought it bulk & were trying to save money.

Next time, BYO and let them know it's in 'protest'. Then let them sample and try out with some patrons. Maybe a new business?
