Creativity points go to the suggestion to build a box with a thermostatically-controlled cooling fan . That almost sounds like work to me!
a cat5 ethernet cable can travel up to 100 meters before it needs to be re-amped and the signal scrubbed for noise.But i would seriously move the modem and router as close together as you can and replace the old cable with a new one.
