Honestly at this point that pit from 3 years ago doesn't really matter anymore.

That could explain the size of the pit. The purpose of plants is to reproduce. It was probably trying desperately to provide the seed with enough energy to allow it to survive.When that picture was taken California was in the most severe drought in our history.
