Yes, SETI@home (SETI=Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) was the first. We had SETI running for years, even when we still had dialup, so you definitely don't need to be always connected. Apparently it didn't get reinstalled after a computer upgrade and it didn't occur to me till now to get it going again. Thanks for the reminder, Sean

Here's an article about SETI and what's developed since, to give people a better idea of what these programs do: The Story of SETI@home- What We Do | The Planetary Society

HTH.

Sure you do! It runs when the computer is idle, i.e., when you're not using it.

Yep, and when you are using it it "steps aside".

I used to do this for EOCF.com. You can view my profile here: BamaStangGuy - User Summary - EXTREME Overclocking Folding @ Home Stats

It's safe to do for those interested.

I'm a nerd so I can't help out. I run a Linux box, although I could dedicate a few of my old boxes to the project.

I'll read more about it later. Thanks for the heads up :)

Hey everyone; we're already 15,600th on the scoreboard (out of more than 80,000) and predicted to be at around 13,000 in on month. Imagine what we could do with your help! Go Team DC!

Interesting! But I never leave a computer on when I'm not using it. I lost a hard drive that way once -- it actually broke.
Neat idea, though!

If you right-click on the desktop and select properties, select the screen-saver tab and click on the 'power' button, you can choose to switch off your hard-drives automatically after a certain period of inactivity (mine is set to 20 minutes). My computer is on continuously and I've never lost a HD. One of them is soon to go, but it's over five years old and led a full and varied life (data is backed up to another partition). Of course, I'd never leave a computer on if it wasn't doing something.
