I think the only place I ever heard that I should use a spoon and fork for eating pasta was when I was very young and living in New Orleans, LA. I could twirl my "sketti" on my fork against my plate with no problem ... but trying to coordinate fork and spoon ... you might just as well have given me chopsticks!

That's me.... using a spoon just feels clumsy. I'm better at eating Chinese with chopsticks than I am with a spoon and Italian.

I've only ever seen it used in American style Italian restaurants. My best friend's father was an Italian immigrant.... I ate various types of spaghetti and linguine there many times and never saw anyone use a spoon except to get the last of the sauce after the pasta was all gone. I twirl a few strands against the plate.... seems just as effective to me, and far less complicated.
