Tomatoes canned #2

I purchased a new cookbook written in the 50's.Many recipes call for tomatoes canned, #2 or # 2 1/2. I don't know what this means. I only know the size of cans in oz.or pound.Anyone know what size cans these numbers mean?

# is a sign for pound...isn't it??

#2 equals 1 pound 4 ounces or 1 pint 2 fluid ounces or 2-1/2 cups

#2-1/2 equals 1 pound 13 ounces or 3-1/2 cups

It is Ok, pdswife. Your answer was not wrong. A # does mean a pound but also means a number. You meant well and it is the thought that counts.
