You can also use online converters to convert a cup to another unit that makes more sense. I am using the following link:

Convert volume units (litres, millilitres, fluid ounces)

You can convert between European and US units (liters, ml, gallons, cups, etc)

1 cup = 236.5882 cc = .2365882 Litres = 0.5 pints in the US = 0.4163373 pints in the UK

I think it has something to do with the rotation of the Earth or the density of water as it approaches 0 degrees Celsius or something.
