The best rub in the world, my wife hates. And, one of the best briskets I ever ate, never saw a smoker. Remember though, when smoking meats, you need moisture. Ribs have less meat than a brisket, and so forth. As noted before, you set the flavor on the smoker, and can finish up in the oven. Have some fun.
