You know, if you wanted to save some time cooking potatoes, you could use like a frozen hashbrown or potato chunks.

That's not a bad idea! :)

When I have to prepare something outside of the DO, I usually try to do it when the coals are firing up. You can't do much during that time anyway, other than preparation, so it works well when you have to cook something else or mix up batter or dough. I usually figure on a 1/2 hour for the coals to get going so that I can start with DO's, so it's a decent amount of time to get things done.
