Use self rising flour, or all purpose flour with 1 1/2 t of baking powder for every cup of flour and of course play God Save the Queen, even a common cake must rise!
 
6oz sr flour, caster sugar, and butter 3 eggs and 1 teaspoon of baking powder, plus is it true that using free range eggs is better for the rising of a cake?
