I read a neat trick that instead of icing sugar cookies, you mix egg whites with food coloring and brush it on the cookies before cooking and when they come out they have this nice colored glaze to them....has anyone ever tried this before? I think I want to!!

Hum...never heard of this before...I would expect it just to brown the cookies more...it won't add that sweetness that you might be looking for but always worth a shot to see how it turns out....let us know how it goes

I have done this before but I am thinking it was with yolks thinned with a bit of water, not whites.

The colors come out bright and clear, but can brown or scorch easily. If you want a little sweetness, sprinkle with just a bit of white sugar.

My mother was an artist at decorating cookies. She used the food coloring mixed in egg whites to paint cookies, but she did it after they came out of the oven and cooled off.
