Date Nut Bars
Old Cleveland Plain Dealer recipe that my mom saved.

Ingredients:
4 eggs, well beaten
2-1/2 cups light brown sugar
1 can (1-2/3 cups) evaporated milk
2 T lemon juice
2-1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1-1/2 t baking soda
1 t cinnamon
1/2 t salt
1-1/2 cups chopped walnuts
1-1/2 cups chopped dates
2 cups unsifted confectioners' sugar
1 t grated orange peel
Few tablespoons whole or evaporated milk

Directions:
Combine beaten eggs, light brown sugar, evaporated milk and lemon juice in large mixing bowl. Sift together flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt. Add all at once to egg mixture, stirring just till blended. Fold in walnuts and dates; do not overmix.

Spread batter in 2 well-greased jelly roll pans, 15-1/2 x 10-1/2 inches. Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Cool.

Meanwhile, prepare frosting by combining confectioners' sugar and orange peel. Blend in milk, a few drops at a time till desired spreading consistency. Frost cookies in pan before cutting into bars. Or dust with sifted confectioners' sugar instead of frosting if mailing.
Makes 5 dozen bars.

I don't have the recipe so I probably shouldn't post but my grandmother used to make a cookie that had a date filling. She made some filled with jam, some with mincemeat and some with dates.
