Sadie Weltman's Date Cookies

Sadie was another friend of my mom's. Yes, I know it says 3 teaspoons of baking powder.

Sadie Weltman's Date Cookies

1/2 cup sweet butter
1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1 large egg, well beaten
1/3 cup whole milk
3-1/2 cup sifted all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Date filling:
2 cups chopped dates
2/3 cup sugar
2/3 cup water
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
1 Tablespoon sweet butter

Cream the butter; add the sugar and mix. Add the egg and vanilla. Mix. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Alternate flour mixture with milk. Put in refrigerator to chill. Roll dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut out circles. Place a spoonful of filling in center and fold. Bake in a moderate oven, 350 degrees until done--do not burn.

Directions for filling:
Cook sugar, dates and water until thick' then add butter and lemon juice.
