This is my favorite. You seem to be pretty serious about not using anything canned or bottled, so I'm not sure you could make a substitution for the tomato soup. Maybe tomato sauce with a little sugar added? And since there is only the two of us, it's great to freeze half for another meal.

Sensational Sloppy Joes

2 pounds ground beef
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup condensed tomato soup (do not dilute)
1 cup ketchup
6 tablespoons grape jelly
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
2 tablespoons prepared yellow mustard
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon celery seed

In a large skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in the soup, ketchup, jelly, brown sugar, vinegar, mustard, salt and celery seed. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes or until heated through. Serve on buns. Also freezes very well.

This is one that I make for my family.

1 pound of ground beef
1 onion, chopped
Brown the ground beef and onion together and drain.

Sauce;mix together;
1 cup catsup
2 tablespoons vinegar
3 teaspoons mustard
2 tablespoons sugar

Place all ingrecients together in a large pan and simmer for 1/2 hour.

This is the same recipe I use, except mine calls for brown sugar. It's straight from the 4-H County Extension summer cooking program I was in betwixt 2nd and 3rd grade, called Redi Cooks. The mascot was Redi-Kilowatt, lol.

My version,
1 lb lean ground beef
1 medium onion
Ketchup
brown sugar
vinegar
Worcestershire sauce (L&P)
jar of banana peppers
hot sauce.
can of diced tomatoes(or fresh diced)

Dice the onion fine. Fry up the meat when it's 1/2 done add the onion. Cook until meat is nicely done. Stir in enough ketchup to liberally coat the meat. sprinkle with brown sugar, add worcestershire(quite a bit), add vinegar.
Stir and taste. You want to get a sweet/sour bite(strong bite) to it. When that has been achieved, add a little of the juice from the jar of banana peppers and toss a few in the sauce. Add the diced tomatoes, stir and allow to simmer for at least 15 minutes. The longer it cooks the thicker it will get. Add hot sauce if/as desired.

Yummy, with a bar-b-que sweet and sour bite!

You can add this one to the list.
1 lbs ground beef
2 Tbs onion
2 Tbs green pepper
1/2 cup ketchup
1 1/2 Tbs brown sugar
2 Tbs Worcestershire
2 Tbs lemon juice
2 Tbs water
Brown ground beef, onion, green pepper, then mix in the other ingredient. make 4 - 5 sandwiches, tastes better the next day if you can wait

Allrecipes.com has one, Emily's Famous Sloppy Joe's. AWESOME!!!

I add a 1/2 tsp salt to the recipe but other than that, the best ever, I can't eat plain ketchup / mustard ones anymore.

My mom procured this recipe from another person years ago. When
she gave it to me the recipe had ‘Fast and Easy B-B-Que’ written at the
top of it, but it taste just like Sloppy Joe. We make it several times a year and I love it.

1/3 cup chopped onion
1 pound lean ground beef
1 cup ketchup, catchup, catsup, whatever
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons prepared yellow mustard
1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
1 small can of tomato paste
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 cup water

Saute onions in the ground beef and drain. Stir in
remaining ingredients and bring to a simmer.

Cover for 15 minutes.

Toast some hamburger buns. Spoon on, and chow
down.

Enjoy!
