I've never been, but one of my professors freshman year encouraged us to do it. He used to be a freelance software writer, and wrote code for business systems. Well one day he was at a site, setting up a system for this business, when some random guy comes along and starts asking him al these questions about the system, and my professor's work, etc. and then just walks away. Prof thought it was a guy with the company, but turns out, that guy stole my Prof's software source code! The guy then started a business competing with my prof. and almost put him out of a job. For some reason, my Prof. couldn't take this dude to court either. So what does he do? He goes dumpster diving at this guy's business offices, and sure enough, finds documents with his original soure right on it... with the businesses Letterhead, but they never even took my Prof's name off of the doc! So my prof. goes to this dude, and tells him, "Hey, lookie what I found!" And basically said that unless he wanted to spend a long time in jail, he would "buy" the code from him. The dude was so scared, and my Prof. got like 1.25 million out of the deal.

There was a news story about a family in San Diego County years ago who went Dumpster diving for a living. They found enough aluminum cans and things they could sell that they made $30,000 a year (and that was over 10 years ago). Not the way I'd want to make my living, but I thought that was interesting. My sister has actually made some pretty interesting finds, including a new Samsonite locking briefcase, with the key.
