My theory is that the dryer chews them up and they end up in the lint filter. I know my clothes didn't have that much lint w it went into the washer.

Did you ever organize the wire hangers in your closet, so you know they are all nice and neat? Next time you look, they are all tangled together. That's because you caught them having an orgy. It's part of the reproductive cycle of wire hangers. It's not completely clear, but it seems that paper clips, the kind that are made out of a wire and usually look like a tiny trombone, are one stage in the life cycle of paper clips.
