Don't know whether you made the soup or not yet...but thyme and bay leaves are great with beans and ham.

I use basil, rosemary, thyme, black pepper, and a bay leaf in my bean soup. For a little spice you can add some crushed red pepper.

I always cook the ham bone first, add onions, tomato sauce, chili powder, garlic bay leaf, celery, red pepper flakes, and chicken stock.

Sometimes I will substitute picante sauce for the tomato sauce.

I always add a can of stewed tomatoes to my bean soup.
