In my limited experience, the problem with blending solids is that the food seems to form a sort of cavern around the blades which are then able to spin with no load. If you add enough water, there's something of a vortex and the food gets drawn to the blades but otherwise not.

I want to make these bean burgers: Chris' Black Bean and Rice Burgers Recipe | Recipezaar but I anticipate having to stop the blender continuously to push the beans down with a spatula.

You're learning seans - a blender is the wrong tool to use for this recipe. Blenders are for liquid or liquidy ingredients ... not for something as dry as a couiple of cans of beans. You could use a food processor and the steel blade - or just use a potato masher to mush up the beans.

potato mashers work great on stuff like this,,,,,,,,,look at it as wrist exercise..........I actually prefer the ones that are rounded on the bottom with holes in them but that's just a personal preference....any will do......
