Yes the cover is heavy. It makes great 'grill marks' on both top and bottom.
I've never seen the DeLongi so really can't tell you anything about the comparison of the tops.
I love mine and use it as a toaster as well. Ohhh! now that I'm remembering that, I can tell you that the top IS heavy because if the bread is not substancial (whole grained or dense) it squishes into a cracker.
If you can wait another month (I know, hard to do) I'm sure they'll be on sale. If you go to the HSN website and look under WP, there will be a picture and probably some info there that you can use for comparison.
What ever one you decide on, I think the most important feature to look for is "the self-leveling" top. It makes all
the difference in contact.
