I need to purchase a new slow cooker. I have no idea what to look for when it comes to these, so any suggestions or recommendations would be great. What functions/settings should I be looking for? 3 heat settings?? Does wattage matter? Do you have any brand preference? I'm looking for a slow cooker with at least a 6qt capacity. Thanks for helping this slow-cooker newb out. ;)

I have a simple rival slow cooker that was about $25 at Target. It has a low and high heat setting, and it's always worked well for me.

Check out the new programmable slow cookers.

Set to Hi or Lo and key in time wanted and when time is over they switch to keep warm mode and some of them will shut off after four hours after switching to keep warm.

I have a 7 qt KitchenAid programmable and a 5 qt. Rival countdown smart pot and neither seem to have the over heating problem that some newer slow cookers have.

Also, the 6 1/2 qt Cuisinart should be a good one.

Hamilton beach also makes a 6 qt. programmable that sells for about $50.00.
