SCORE! I picked up a 6th edition of this over the weekend for $5.00.
I've been wanting one for a while, but am a cheapo, LOL!

Showed it to my wife, who was less than impressed.....
She was planning on buying a copy for my birthday present!
Oops.

Off to learn! :)

I know this is an old post but thanks for the recommendation, IC. I found that I had Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Fannie Farmer Boston Cooking School and Escoffier along with some others in a box of books I inherited. I've been reading them and the J Childs book has been very helpful but I can see that a basic book for a total novice like me would be helpful. I'll definitely buy this one.
