I am watching IRON CHEF AMERICA and the challanging chef used a blowtorch to carmelize/crisp some rock cane sugar ontop of cubes of melons. I think thats a great idea and want to do it at a dinner this week.

I unfortunately don't have a fancy blowtorch that they have on the show.

I do have a blowtorch lighter.

I am just doing a very small scale dessert with it, wondering if it would work, or if the butane would render my food inedible.

Thanks in advance.

it should work with out a problem

maybe try it first today and see how it comes out and smells.

i saw that one with teh burleed melon.

let me know who won that one. I missed the end

The blowtorch the chef is using might very well be fueled by butane.
I don't think you'll have a problem either.

The torches that chefs use are either propane or butane. So no, using a butane lighter would not alter the flavor of your food.

My only question would be if the lighter would hold enough butane to last long enough to do the job. And, the way mine is made I would probably be dragging my tumb nuckle through hot molten sugar.

Harbor Freight (hardware store) has a small butane torch for $8. You could probably find the "old school" big BernzOMatic propane torch for about $15 at most hardware stores.

The challanger won. First time I saw Bobby Flay lose.
