there are posts on this website about seasoning cast iron. check them out. it is a process of coating the pan with lard, crisco, or peanut oil and baking it or heating it as you don't have an oven. it coats the iron and keeps it from rusting. Many cast iron pans now come preseasoned and will say so. Many made in China are now preseasoned and sold to Walmart and kmart. A preseasoned pan will be black not gray.
