Metal Rack in Microwave

I recently moved and the house I moved into did not have a microwave. My brother in law just flat out gave me one he had in storage. I installed it and it works great. He told me the other day that he forgot to give me the metal rack that goes in the middle of it. I've never had a microwave with one of these in it. Is it really needed and what would you really need it for?

Maybe it's a microwave with a grill function? My microwave has a grill and it comes with a wire rack for grilling.

Ours had one so that you could fit more in it. There is a turntable on the bottom and then a metal rack in the middle.

We do have a turntable in ours. I really don't use the microwave much so I can't imagine needing more space in it.

Ours is a GE and has a metal rack which we seldom use - it also is RED inside (like a brick oven) and has a grill feature.

Ours has a grill feature with a metal rack and a glass turntable...

But having accidentally left a fork in the microwave once - I'm not in a hurry to put anything metal in their ever again. ^_^
