Speckled why?

Shopping for a new set of basic pots/pans/skillets etc. Why oh, OMG, why are they all speckled? Speckles make me nervous. Do they have a functional purpose?

Various sets are labeled 'vintage' or 'Granny Speckles' or "Retro' or 'Pioneer Woman. 'And why are the interiors black? Who wants to cook on black? And if anyone can point me to good quality ceramic yellow exterior with white interior, you've won my vote -- if you're running for something.
