I recently read a recipe that says you've to use the tin cans (after using up the beans, etc) to use as a mould to bake cakes. Is it safe? Till now I've used only aluminium and glass.

A friend used to use tins for baking bread! Tins are usually made of aluminium, and I've seen other bakeware and cookware made of this, to no ill effect.

I've been using them for years, but am always careful to remove all labels and glue from the outside and make certain there's no coating/lining on the inside. I just use plain old "naked" cans. Usually one-pound coffee cans.
