what the symbol that looks like a keypad on a phone means on the Zwilling Henckel knives?! I've looked at it close up on their web site and they all seem to have all the squares whited out...thought I'd ask cuz I'm looking at buying a Santoku knife off of someone on CL (sealed, new & still pricey but cheaper than retail!) and it's got a few of the 'keypad thingys' NOT whited out?! Does that mean it's a 'second?!' Haha! Help! (and thanks)

IIRC, they grid looking boxes represent what type of steel they are made from, certain block will be filled, representing a different metal.

I just got a reply from Zwilling Henckel...

Hi Cindi,

The stamp you are referring to is the date that the knife was manufactured. Unfortunately we do not offer instructions on how to read the code as it is for our internal use only.
