i know that must be very hard for you and your brother. was there no way he could stay home, with someone coming in to help him? leaving his home and things is very scary. maybe he will adjust quickly. do they have games and activities available? encourage him to join in. i want to die at home, not in a hospital or some old folks home. tell brother i said hi and that i will be thinking of him. what is his name. be brave you are doing what u have to do.

    Part 3 -
As you have dogs, there is the possibility that any cat would attempt to get onto these surfaces to escape the dogs - but that depends on both the dogs and the cat. Every personality is different.

Think you would be better off trying to get another dog that can mouse - like a little terrier. They are good rabbiters, so possibly good at other critters. There was a thread on DC about how to catch mice. Chowhound/Pacanis started the thread, so you could ask him about a good way to catch them.

    Good luck!!

Okay -I have to post in 3 parts!!!! Part 2 -

As to the getting onto table tops etc, until I had too many cats in the house, only a couple ever got onto the table top, and never onto the kitchen counters. Matter of training them. Since my cat numbers doubled and additionally, since they no longer are allowed out of the house, there are several that go onto the dining table (and sleep) (but then I seldom ever eat at the table, and if I do, I just clean it really well). One kitten continually jumps into the fridge and the kitten from the previous litter has jumped into the dryer whilst I was emptying it. (Have to do a cat count now before I use washer/dryer!!)

Okay, have to post this in two parts as answer too long!! (Part 1)

I personally wouldn't take on a cat of any age for that reason. There is no guarantee that any cat is a good mouser and there is a lot of difference between catching the mouse and doing something (useful) with it. Out of all the cats/kittens I have had, very few have been any good at getting rid of mice. More have been better at bringing them INTO the house as gifts for me! (Then I have to go catch them and let them out!)

We had the funeral on Friday and it was quite lovely. We as a family are notoriously running late - some to greater degrees than others - but we were all ready and waiting when the limo turned up. The limo lost its license plate on the way to the viewing at the funeral parlour, so the driver had to go back while we were visiting mum. Gave a bit of levity to the situation.

Every so often, I start to cry when I think of no more mum but as it doesn't really help, I just stop thinking like that and so stop crying. There will be days when I can't do that so i do it while I can.

My niece is 100% clear now. She got the hysterectomy, went through the chemo and radiation and had a pap this last Sept and all is clean. BIL is the one that we worry about now as he is battling Mesotheleoma and doesn't have a good prognosis. It's just a waiting game as there is no cure or remission for this. Thank you for your prayers, I really do appreciate them and they do help!!

He lives with it well. He misses a lot of foods that just can't be blended. His favorite being salad. His Gastroenterologist says that there is nothing more that he can do because everything that he can do, is not what is wrong, but, I have not given up. When my insurance kicks in, we're going to try this from a different perspective. I honestly think that he had a stroke 3 years ago. The very first thing that started was sitting one day at work, during lunch, he got lightheaded, clammy and broke out in a cold sweat. The "dizziness" never left. It not like the room spinning, it's like the feeling he's gonna pass out. He has vision disturbances, slurs, gets words mixed up, things like that, but, no one would listen. They all said, oh, it's just vertigo and gave him pills that did absolutely nothing but make him nauseous.I will find the answer, lol.
