Absolutely devastating. Centuries of history and relics....gone. That's all I can say about it now. :ermm::cry:

A shame. A lot of the old world wood craftsmanship inside burned up. I know it's too early to fix a cause, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be the same thing that nearly destroyed England's Windsor Castle, a welder not being careful with his torch.

Well, they think they have saved most of the building. They got all the relics and artwork out. The statues that were near the spire were removed a few days ago for refurbishing. Two of the three big stained glass windows seem to be fine. The spire is apparently the great loss.

The spire was added centuries after the cathedral was built. They may or may not rebuild it. That is the subject of speculation.

I went back through my photos from my one time in Paris, and I did not get to Notre Dame. I spent most of my time in Paris at the Louvre.

I think if the spire can be rebuilt, it will be. Lots of very wealthy French people are making pledges of financial support for the rebuilding effort and the spire was a highly visible part of an iconic building.

French Billionaires Have Pledged 300 Million Euros To Help Rebuild The Notre Dame Cathedral

Luxury goods magnate Bernard Arnault said he would donate 200 million euros the morning after retail mogul François-Henri Pinault pledged 100 million euros.

Two French billionaires have pledged to donate a total of 300 million euros to help reconstruct the Notre Dame Cathedral after a catastrophic fire tore through the historic structure, collapsing its spire, and causing significant damage.

Their donations came as Paris firefighters declared Tuesday morning that "the entire fire is out".

"A group of experts are analysing all of the structures to establish the next stages," Paris fire brigade spokesperson Gabriel Plus told reporters.

Another large donation, along with technical expertise: "The company also offered French authorities all of its teams, including creative, architectural and financial specialists, to help with the reconstruction and fundraising efforts." Screenshot_20190416-101449_Chrome.jpg

The destruction is horrible but it could have been so much worse. So much still stands such as the towers and the magnificent rose window and more. There's heartbreaking sadness but much to be grateful for in the light of day.

The Catholic Church is arguably the wealthiest organization in the entire world. That Norte Dame burned is tragic, certainly, but nobody was injured or killed, and they saved that thorny crown.

I say, let the Church pay for its own repairs and restoration, and those French billionaires and their $300 donations? Surely there are some homeless and sick people in France who could benefit from that money a lot more?

Actually, one firefighter was seriously injured. But, while the damage to the cathedral saddens me, it's just a building. I had a similar reaction when I heard about the huge donations by the billionaires. There are so many people in need and our planet is practically on fire. I won't go on because it could be considered political.

France has universal health care, so I don't think that's much of a problem. I don't know anything about their homeless situation. Besides, who's to say they don't want already do that? Tho is a way of soothing people in a highly visible situation that is very upsetting to many people around the world, not just the French.

It's not just a building - it's an irreplaceable piece of of history and an architectural jewel. I'm not a religious person at all, but I appreciate the art and history it represents.

I meant it's just a thing. I didn't mean that it's just any old building. Yes, it's an architectural gem, but it's still just a thing. It's so well documented, recorded, photographed, that even if it wasn't repaired, it wouldn't be a complete loss.

And I'll stop now.

Vows of poverty do not apply to the Church. They like to accumulate their wealth. I'd bet if the Vatican was asked to foot the bill for the cathedral's repair, they would refuse.

Well, I disagree. You can't recreate the sensation of entering into a building like that and experiencing the beauty of the windows with recordings and photographs.

Yes, the conversation has become political now.

For some this loss mean little, for others the loss can't even be put into words. I'd hope we can show more respect for what this "building" represents to much of the world.
