A simple plastic spoon coated in chocolate is a nice added touch with a gift of coffee beans. You'll soon think of other gifts that would be enhanced by these sweet utensils.

You'll need a 12 ounce package of chocolate chips. You may use semi-sweet, white chocolate, raspberry flavored, or any other style chip of your choosing.

Other items you'll need:
40 heavy plastic spoons
Shortening
Waxed paper
Deep glass measuring cup
Colored cellophane or Saran Wrap
Thin Ribbon

 • Pour the chips into a heatproof container, such as a measuring cup. A deep cup is the best for this project.
 • Microwave the cup of chips at half power for one minute. Stir. Repeat in 30 second bursts until chocolate is smooth and fully melted, but do NOT over cook.
 • Add to the melted chocolate one teaspoon of shortening for each cup of chips. Stir lightly until just blended.
 • Dip plastic spoons into the chocolate to coat the bowl and about one inch of the handle. If the chocolate starts to harden, microwave 30 seconds at half power.
 • Lay spoons on wax paper to set.
 • When chocolate spoons have set, put them in the freezer for 15 minutes. This makes them easier to handle when you start to wrap them.
 • Take squares of colored cellophane and wrap the coated spoons. Tie with a pretty ribbon.
Once you have mastered the basic technique, you can experiment! Try drizzling streaks of white chocolate over dipped spoons to create a design. Sprinkle colored sugar on chocolate before it sets for a holiday look.

A bundle of chocolate spoons set in a coffee mug makes a nice gift.

Tie a few spoons to a bag of gourmet coffee beans for a coffee loving friend.

Keep spoons on hand during the holidays to use when serving drinks to your visitors.

This recipe for Chocolate Spoons is very similar. Like the idea of using different food dunkers and adding a flavored liqueur -- maybe Kahlua, etc. as an experiment. Or dunk half the spoon in dark chocolate and the tip in white chocolate. A tip I read: prop the chocolate coated spoons (under the bowl of the spoon) on a wooden spoon to air dry to prevent sticking to the wax paper. Hope that makes sense. :)

Use this recipe to dip other snack foods...cookies, pretzels, potato chips, or dried fruit. Dip half of each treat in chocolate and follow the same process as for dipping spoons.

INGREDIENTS:

12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
24 heavy duty plastic spoons (preferably clear)
4 ounces white chocolate chips or baking bar for decorating (optional)

Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper.

Melt the chocolate chips in a microwave or double boiler until smooth, stirring frequently.

Dip the bowl of each spoon in the melted chocolate until covered on both sides. Tap the handle of the spoon against the side of the pan to remove excess chocolate.

Place spoons on the waxed paper with the bowl side of the spoon facing up.

Refrigerate until chocolate hardens.

Melt the white chocolate in a microwave or double boiler until smooth, stirring frequently.

TO DECORATE THE CHOCOLATE SPOONS:

Pour melted white chocolate into ziploc-type plastic bag. Cut a small hole in one corner of the bag with scissors.

Drizzle white chocolate on chocolate coated spoons in design of your choice.

Refrigerate until chocolate hardens.

FINISH THE SPOONS:

Wrap each spoon in cellophane or plastic wrap in clear, colored, or patterned. Tie with ribbon or raffia. Add tags stating the flavor. Add a couple of spoons to the ribbon of your finished gift basket.

OPTIONS:
 • Reverse the semisweet and white chocolate; make white chocolate spoons and drizzle with semisweet chocolate.
 • Wilton Candy Melts is a chocolate product that comes in many colors. Use red and/or green for Christmas. Check out their website for further information: Wilton Candy Melts
 • Add a few drops of liqueur or extract flavoring to the base chocolate.
 • Purchase "Baker's Dipping Chocolate" instead of making your own.
 • Dip half of chocolate chip cookes, shortbread cookes, pretzels, Pringles, etc. in this chocolate. Use cello treat size bagsfor a nice presentation.

I like the idea of the liquers. My husband likes the irish cream flavored creamer. I bet Baileys added would be yummy for him!
