A wonderful baking and cooking alternative to fresh buttermilk is Sacco's Cultured Buttermilk Blend. It comes in a red, white, blue and tan 12 oz. can and can be found in the baking section. It's powdered and all you have to do is add water to the powder to make up the buttermilk. I've used it for years and it works great and it lasts a good while on the shelf. On the back there is a recipe for pancakes that are to die for. They used to have a buttermilk biscuits recipe that was great as well and can probably be found at their website, SacoFoods@aol.com.

The dried buttermilk is a good ingredient to have on hand indeed. You can also make a sub for buttermilk in recipes by just souring some milk--add a TBS of vinegar or lemon juice to a cup of milk.
