Hello! I am making a sangria and know nothing about wine. The recipe calls for a "light red wine." Any recommendations before I head off to the store? Thank you!

If you can find a Spanish Rioja you will be on the right track! Good luck! I LOVE Sangria - white especially , but I sure won't turn down a red!

Don't know what you ended with...but generally, sangria is made with zinfandel, triple sec and brandy and a few squeezes of fresh citrus.

What did you get?

Since you are adding fruit juice, brandy, sugar and maybe sparkling water, you definitely need not buy anything expensive.

I'd stay away from cabs and (sorry vera) zinfandels because they generally are pretty robust and are not really "light" reds.

Because you are going to adulterate the wine so much, I really don't think it matters that much.

I made sangria almost every weekend using a couple cases of $2 wine I bought at the local liquor store. It was delicious!
