Woody and hollow asparagus

I just went out to pick some asparagus from my garden and come to find that they are woody and hollow in the stems. I mean all the stem, not just the usual woody part. Can anyone tell me what happened!!!!

I've never seen or heard of that happening, sorry.

You probably let it grow too big. As asparagus gets larger, it gets more fibrous, though I've never heard of it being so bad as to have a hollow interior.

Thanks for imput. No, they are just starting to come up and these were about 6" and not very thick. I hope the rest of them are better, that's all I can say as we love asparagus and this is the year we should be able to harvest for 6 - 8 weeks.

Hi - Well, I picked another few asparagus today and they were not hollow or woody - guess it was a fluke that the first few were that way. Thank goodness for small blessings!!!
