Until 1468, a pirate town called Anfa stood on the site. The Portuguese destroyed the city but returned in 1515 and built Casa Branca, which means "White House".
In the middle of the 18th century, an earthquake leveled the city; when it was repopulated with Spaniards and other Europeans, it was rechristened Casablanca
