Sunday Special- Diner Slang- 1920 to 1970

Are you old enough to remember the colorful language used by the waitress to communicate to "Shortie" ?
(every Short-Order Cook was named "Shortie", or so it seemed).
When she said these phrases, what was she really saying ?

Jeapardy felt like so long ago.

Some I knew, some I figured out.
1, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14, 16,
19, 24, 25, 26.

I think that's the most I've gotten correct ever.

I would love to know the evolution of dinner speak. When I first started cooking some of it was still in use. And some where in one of my cook books I have a long list of dinner speak. I dig it out and post it. It is a big piece of cooking Americana.
possibly started in the old diners, greasy spoons of years ago
 
I hadn't seen this until now. Okay, here's how I did:

1. Poached eggs on toast (I knew it was eggs and toast, but didn't know they were poached)
2. Nope
3. Three of anything (guessed)
4. Nope
5. toasted English Muffin (guessed)
6. Hot Dog (guessed)
7. No Onions (I got this backwards and thought it meant add onions)
8. Nope
9. Nope
10. salad (I thought lettuce, not salad)
11. Nope
12. I had heard this one before but didn't remember.
13. Nope
14. Nope (I was thinking steak and eggs)
15. Meat done Rare
16. Scramble the eggs
17. Nope
18. Nope
19. Nope
20. Nope
21. Nope (I figured ham, but that's all)
22. Nope
23. Nope
24. Nope (figured hotdog, but didn't think of sauerkraut)
25. Nope
26. Nope (sheesh, should have gotten that one!)
