I want to make a simple lentil dish with onions and tomatoes. My question is when shall I add the chopped tomatoes, at the beginning or later (does it matter)? Thanks :chef:

It depends on what you're going for. If you want a tomatoey (is that a word?) sauce, put them in early and let them cook down. They'll break down more the longer you cook them. If you add them at the end, they will be chunkier, firmer and taste fresher.

I think I'm going to add them at the end. Also, when I add the caramelized onions at the beginning, they lose their flavor and "disappear" when the dish is cooked, lol. I'll add the onions at the end too..

The lentils were incredibly delicious..

Tips:

-cook the lentils longer (and use more water/stock)
-stir in (more) melted butter

So simple, so delicious..

A......I always use stock or broth in mine (prefer chicken stock) and never use butter...if you're not a vegan try it with some chicken.......ham, ham hocks, etc., will add a lot of flavor, too, I love it with cumin............glad that yours turned out great!!!! :)
