My mom cut this recipe out of the local newspaper years ago. It is excellent and makes scads of cookies. When I want to make decorated cut-out cookies, usually this is the recipe that I use. Pie Susan

Ma Kmitt's Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:
1 cup butter or margarine
1-1/2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 t vanilla
3-1/2 cups flour, sifted
2 t cream of tartar
1 t baking powder
1/2 t salt

Directions:
Beat butter 'til fluffy. Beat in sugar; then beat in eggs, one at a time. Beat in vanilla. Stir together the dry ingredients; beat in. Wrap dough and chill overnight. Cut off part of dough, leaving rest in refrigerator. Roll out on well-floured pastry cloth or board, to 1/8" thick (or less). Flour dough surface lightly and dip cutters in flour. Cut cookies and place on greased cookie sheets. Sprinke with color sugar, if desired. Bake in preheated 375 degree oven, just 'til light brown on edges; about 10 minutes. But Watch! Makes lots.
