The term "Hooker" originated with the U.S. Army General Joseph Hooker, whose penchant for war was matched only by his predilection for paid female companionship.
During the Civil War, he spent so much time cavorting with "Ladies of the night" that these girls became known as "Hooker's Division". This was eventually shortened to "Hookers".

In support of the American effort in World War II, the statuettes were made of plaster and were traded in for gold ones after the war had ended.
