The United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, known as the Shakers or Shaking Quakers, is a religious sect thought to be a development of the Protestant Quakers.
Founded upon the teachings of Ann Lee, the group was known for their emphasis on social equality and rejection of marriage, which led to their precipitous decline in numbers after their heavy involvement in the running of orphanages was curtailed. With few surviving members, Shakers today are mostly known for their cultural contributions (especially style of music and furniture).

The Shakers did not practice procreation themselves. Children were included into their communal families through adoption or conversion. The Shakers were welcoming of all, often taking in orphans and the homeless. When Shaker youngsters, girls and boys, reached the age of twenty-one, they were free to leave the Shaker religion and go their own separate way or to remain with the Shaker communal family.

According to an article I read years ago (National Geographic, I think), there were only two Shakers left, both elderly women, and I have heard since then that they have died. I guess someone decided to start it up again?

This is an from article published on 9/17/10 ;

"Just above Sabbathday Lake, in central Maine, the last Shaker community straddles an old road in the midst of 1800 acres of forest and farmland. At its peak, there were nearly 200 members here. Now, the three remaining are Brother Arnold Hadd, 53. He came here when he was 20. Sister June Carpenter is 72 and too shy for an interview. She has been here for 21 years. And Sister Frances Carr is 83. She was brought here when she was 10."

I found a 2006 article that mentions four shakers, two men and two women...........
