the first lead pencil was developed in the 16th century in borrowdale, england, where a
large graphite deposit was discovered. the descriptor "lead" derives from roman times, when people used a thin lead rod called a stylus to write down information.
"lead" pencils are actually made from a mixture of powdered graphite and clay which is kiln-fired.
